ESSENCE: Art Residency

Photography

During a month-long residency at The Vestibules, Bristol-based painter Bolarinwa explored two compelling series entitled INNOCENCE and AFRODISIAC, using art as a tool for social commentary.

Afrocentric artworks

Bolarinwa’s works blends bold geometric shapes and electrifying pop colours with the rich symbolism of African spirituality and textiles. I captured a small part of this journey through my lens.

In May 2025, his residency culminated in ESSENCE at The Vestibules in Bristol courtesy of Art Space UK, a final exhibition that brings his ideas to life through vibrant, powerful Afrocentric artworks.

Through photography I captured Bolarinwa’s artworks and his interaction with items within the studio space, using different lenses for expansive shots of geometric compositions and close-up setups to capture artisanal textures.

“I am because we are”

At the heart of Bolarinwa’s practice is the belief that art is a reciprocal exchange, something deeply rooted in connection and collective resistance beyond serving the bourgeoisie. The Ubuntu proverb, “I am because we are,” is central to this, reminding us of the interdependence we have with one another.

I documented the outputs from Bolarinwa’s art residency to translate into a compelling photographic story for Bolarinwa’s use.
